Study Start Programme

Get the best start for your degree at Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é with Study Start: a two-week academic induction for students.

Starting a university degree can seem a daunting prospect. Often students come with many questions, for example:

  • Where is the library and how does it work?
  • What kinds of classes will I have, and will they be similar to those in my previous studies?
  • What conventions do I need to follow when writing essays, reports or dissertations?
  • How can I avoid plagiarism?
  • What is the best way to organise my time so I can get everything done?
  • How can I get good marks on my assignments and exams?

Study Start aims to help you become an independent and confident student, well-prepared for life at Lancaster.

Programme details

You will study in a small class of undergraduate or postgraduate students. Each class has one tutor who guides the group learning, and also supports individual students with feedback and discussions.

Course aims

  • To raise awareness of writing conventions in different academic discourse communities.
  • To develop and practise effective study and time management skills.
  • To develop referencing skill.
  • To raise awareness of the expectations and standards at the appropriate level of study.
  • To maximise students’ chances of succeeding in their degree programmes.
  • For international students, to assist in settling into the academic culture of the UK.

Assessments

The main assessment method is a written assignment (1000 words) to be submitted in several stages before final submission at the end of the programme. The feedback you get on this assignment will help you decide which aspects of your work to prioritise when your degree coursework starts.
