Current research
Imogen's current research centres on , a large new project she is developing during her fellowship in Helsinki. Weaving together social and environmental history, the social sciences and the life sciences, Elemental Inequalities rethinks the socioenvironmental crisis of late capitalism through historic and contemporary class struggles for clean water, breathable air, food and land ¨C from food and energy poverty to campaigns against hyperscale data centres. The project recovers a materialist socioenvironmental tradition, from Engels' 'social murder' and E. P. Thompson's histories of enclosure to Linebaugh's 'thanatocracy', which it brings into conversation with the "elemental turn" in wider social sciences and decolonial ecological thought.
This work builds on Imogen's connected project "Hard Times: Poverty and Protest in Britain", and on her ongoing research and engagement with clinicians, social and care workers, charities and activists working at the front line of the UK's cumulative welfare crisis.
Public sociology
Imogen has collaborated with many civil society, think tank, charitable, community and heritage organisations. Her work with Lancashire Museums Service on the 18th-century Black Lancastrians project (funded by Art Fund, Arts Council England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Association of Independent Museums) was runner-up for the 2023 Independent Museums Association Decolonizing Award and featured as a GEM/Art Fund 'Reimagining Engagement' case study. Other recent engagement includes the Joseph Rowntree Foundation's 'Stigma Free Futures' project, the Poverty Truth Network and Lancaster Black History Group. She has co-produced publications, podcasts, videos and educational resources that make sociological research accessible to public and policy audiences, including (JRF, 2024);, a Key Stage 2 teaching resource adopted by the Morecambe Bay Curriculum (2024); podcast series; '', a Connected Sociologies video lecture (9k+ views); and the graphic essay (2018).
