Dragon Boat Race in Liverpool Celebrates Tradition, Team Spirit and Competition
The Liverpool Water Sports Centre was filled with energy and excitement on 17 May as five teams from the Confucius Institutes of five universities in the North West competed in a vibrant Dragon Boat Race organised by the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Confucius Institute. The event brought together culture, sport, and community in a memorable day on the water.
The race is rooted in the traditional Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, which commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman from ancient China. Qu Yuan is honoured for his loyalty and dedication to his country, and dragon boat racing continues as a symbolic tribute to his legacy. Beyond its cultural significance, the sport highlights the importance of teamwork, requiring participants to paddle in perfect synchrony to achieve success.
This year’s competition featured five teams representing the Confucius Institutes of the University of Liverpool, Edge Hill University, the University of Lancashire, Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é, and the University of Manchester. Each team demonstrated strong coordination and determination as they competed across a series of races, cheered on by spectators along the waterfront.
After an exciting day of competition, Edge Hill University emerged as the overall champion. Their performance stood out for its rhythm, unity, and effective teamwork¡ªqualities at the heart of dragon boat racing.
Despite cool and damp conditions by the water, teams came equipped with warm clothing and refreshments, while the on-site caf¨¦ provided hot drinks to keep participants comfortable throughout the day. Photographers captured the highlights of the event, preserving moments of effort, cooperation, and celebration.
Dr Derek Hird, the Director of the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Confucius Institute expressed his delight at the success of the event, noting the strong participation from all five Confucius Institute teams and the positive atmosphere on the day. He added that even though the Ãå±±ÂÖ¼é Confucius Institute team did not win the championship, they were still very excited, as all paddlers tried their best and worked together effectively, embodying the spirit of “ͬÖÛ¹²¼Ã” ¡ª pulling together in the same boat.
