Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month 2026

June is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month: a celebration of rich histories, living cultures and communities whose presence has shaped life in Britain in ways that deserve much fuller recognition.

This year’s theme is “Onwards With Hope”. It is a beautiful phrase, and a demanding one. Hope is not decorative. It calls on institutions, researchers, practitioners and policymakers to listen more carefully, share power more honestly, and recognise Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities as makers of knowledge and change.

For the Centre for Child and Family Justice Research, this month speaks directly to the kind of work we want to support: research that takes communities seriously, pays attention to injustice, and keeps asking how systems can become fairer, braver and more humane.
